Wait, what is this?

This is a sport and a martial art. Its commonly called HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) or Historical Fencing, or even Western Martial Arts. Essentially we train how to use swords and other weapons based on historical manuscripts written by fencing masters hundreds of years ago.

Is this like larp?

No, larp (Live Action Role Play) is a bit different. We focus on the art of fencing specifically. We don't play a character or pretend we are in a different setting. Also, we use a mixture of weapon simulators including foam and synthetic material, but primarily steel.

Do you use real swords?

No! Real swords are sharp and dangerous enough to cause serious bodily injury or death if used to fence with. We use sword simulators that can look extremely similar but they are blunted and flexible enough for safe sparring while using modern protective equipment.

Is this safe?

Yes! Saftey is a top priority here at Snohomish Dueling Society. Fencing is very safe when done with modern protective equipment and proper control. Although there is inherent risk with any full contact sport or martial art, even though we make every effort to maintain the highest standard of safety.
